MIRAGE Contemporary Art Space

Artist Talk by Roun Ry

Jan 18, 2020 – Jan 18, 2020
Roun Ry is a self-taught photographer and translator based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. He documents the life of the people living on the Tonle Sap Lake and the Cham Community.
“When I first started documenting the fishermen living on the Tonle Sap lake, I had no idea that their lives were under pressure” – says the photographer, author of the "Our Village" exhibition at MIRAGE Contemporary Art Space. The artist slowly gained the trust of the locals, who let him into their world. Through a lense of his camera, he saw reflections of himself and his many brothers and sisters distressed by the prolonged draughts endangering  rice harvest from his family’s rice fields. The village, which he once only witnessed from afar of the top of Phnom Krom hill, became close and familiar.
Listen to more stories by Roun Ry on Saturday, January 18. The artist talk accomapnies his documentary photography exhibition "Our Village".
